imposter sandwich

this post is about shortcomings. we all know that no one is perfect, so when i decided to recreate curly's santa barbarella sandwich, i knew not to expect the real thing. the approximation, however, was ridiculously good.

it consisted of inglehoffer sweet hot mustard, mesclun mix, monterey jack cheese, morningstar fake bacon, broccoli rabe sprouts, red onion, and tomato all on seeded wheat bread.

i may not have pumpkinseed pesto or whatever other things they use to make their sandwich so delicious, and i may not be able to figure out how to rotate this picture, but this sandwich was pretty good.

*edit* picture rotated

Last night at the NYC Food Film Festival (http://sweetpotatofriends.blogspot.com/2009/06/food-on-film.html) we were discussing the fact that the sandwich is one of the greatest foods in existence. Thoughts on that?

I'm a huge sandwich fan. If made well (with enough plant matter) then you can eat a huge one and not feel sluggish afterward which is a huge plus. They're also portable, versatile (I mean, just think of the changes you can make in the bread alone!), and fast. Finally, they can span the gamut of expense-gourmet from cheap comfort foody PB&J to some fancy-pants artisan bread & etc. for toppings.

Where is the recipe? What am I supposed to do with the ingredients you listed? Soak them in poison? Let me guess: I have to "buy" a "membership" to your blog to read the part where you tell me how to make a fucking sandwich. That's great. Brilliant. Way to be 2.0. Sweet Potato FIENDS is more accurate, if you ask me.
